Brazil's central bank lost 12.453 billion reais in the first two weeks of August due to foreign exchange swaps, bringing its total losses this year to 52.308 billion reais (5.5 reais to the dollar), the Economic Value newspaper reported. The sharp appreciation of the dollar against the real was the main cause of the losses.
