At 0:00 on February 25, Brasilia, Rio DE Janeiro, Sao Paulo and eight other states in south-central Brazil ended their daylight saving time (DST) and restored standard time (setting clocks back one hour) to GMT-3, 11 hours later than Beijing time (GMT+8).

Daylight saving time in Brazil is designed to take advantage of natural light during summer days in the south-central region and reduce the amount of electricity used for lighting. This is the 36th time that Brazil has implemented daylight saving time (DST), which began on November 5 last year and lasted for 111 days. The Minister of Mines and Energy estimated that it saves 4-5% of electricity during peak hours, or about 200 megawatts, or the equivalent of 2 million rooms. (after)
